A Portrait of Gordon Pinsent

A film by Brigitte Berman OPENS IN HALIFAX FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2017 Cineplex Park Lane

The film takes the audience on a deeply affecting personal exploration of Gordon Pinsent as an artist, actor, poet, painter, husband and father. And it reveals how Gordon’s spirit inspires his creativity, his life, and his artistic journey – no matter what the role.

But, at the very heart of The River of My Dreams, is the real story of Gordon’s life - his deep and continuing love for Charm - his second wife and his true soul mate. Pinsent met Charmion King, the Grande Dame of Canadian theatre, when he played her love interest in the 1961 theatrical production of The Madwoman of Chaillot. They married a year later. It was Charm who brought in the light for Gordon, and helped him reconcile with his past.

In some of the most poignant passages of The River of My Dreams, Pinsent recites John Keats, William Shakespeare and Lewis Carroll. His readings put life into poetry, transforming them into cinema. And he gives us a sense of life fully lived, brimming with a shot of mischievous playfulness. The film also takes us on a revealing journey through decades of Canadian culture and shows the gorgeous wraparound of the Newfoundland coast line with its craggy cliffs and charming villages.
